Quantum Physics
It wasn’t all that long ago that die-hard James Bond fans were bemoaning Daniel Craig as the new 007. He was too blond, too rough around the edges, too something. “But we did well last time,” said the actor, with some degree of understatement, at Tuesday night’s Tribeca Film Institute premiere of Quantum of Solace. He was referring, of course, to his megastar-making performance in Casino Royale. As for any remaining naysayers? “I wasn’t listening then, and I’m not listening now.”
It’s a policy that’s paid off. In the past ten days, Craig’s new Bond flick has raked in more than $100 million and has been the No. 1 film in every international territory where it has opened. It hits North America this Friday, and film industry insiders are banking on a tally to top $200 million by then, crumbling economy notwithstanding. The reason? “I think it’s pretty obvious,” Liya Kebede said at Tavern on the Green, where she joined Robert De Niro, Debra Messing, and Jon Hamm for a post-screening dinner. “Have you seen the man?”
Not that all eyes were on Craig. André Balazs said he had his on the breakthrough performance of Olga Kurylenko, a former Eastern Bloc-er who did a convincing Caribbean accent. (Sure, André, that’s what was impressive about the pouty-lipped Bond beauty.) And still others were eyeing the costumes. “I couldn’t get over the suits,” Andrew Saffir sighed. “I should ask where he got them made.” By that point, Craig had left, but we were happy to tell Saffir it was none other than Texas’ own agent provocateur, Tom Ford, who was responsible for Bond’s wardrobe.
